MIKE STARED at the door where Simon had just exited. Oh shit. He keeps running out on me. He knew why Simon had run, though. And as soon as Simon came back, Mike would set him straight.

He leaned back and stared at the ceiling. He couldn’t take it all in. Simon—in Manchester, in love with him, a virgin…. That last part sent shivers through him, and he wasn’t sure why. Then he thought about Simon’s face when Mike had recounted what had happened in the club. He’d only ever told one person about that.

That’s another thing I’ll have to tell Si about—Tony. At least that part wouldn’t hurt.

Seeing Simon again brought back so many memories. They’d grown up together, gone to the same schools, played together…. Their families had even gone on holiday together, not just once, but for several years in a row. And falling for his best friend had seemed like the most natural thing in the world—up until the moment when Simon had rejected him.

The pain of discovering that Simon had lied to him, had hidden his true feelings, was beginning to fade as realization settled over Mike like a soft blanket. Simon loves me. After all these years apart, he loves me. And bloody hell, he waited for me.

The enormity of that was only just beginning to sink in—and it left Mike with a few questions of his own.

Simon staggered through the door with a carryall filled with logs, which he dumped into the basket.

“That should be plenty for the rest of the night.” Simon straightened and rubbed his hands together briskly. Then he turned to face Mike. “I want to hear more, you know. But before you tell me, I have to ask you something really important.”

“Go ahead.” Mike sat up straight. It was noticeable that Simon didn’t return to the sofa, but chose to sit back on the rug, the coffee table between them. His heart sank.

“Do you enjoy the life you lead?”

Simon’s abrupt question shocked him. “What?”

“You heard me.” Simon’s jaw set. “Do you like being a rent boy? Is this how you see spending the rest of your life?”

“Fuck no!” Nausea rolled through him at the very thought. “But right now, it’s not like I have many other options, yeah?”

Simon’s face softened. “Of course there’s an option. You… you could go home.”

Home. Oh Si, you have no fucking idea how much I want that. Mike stared at him, a sudden rush of cold spreading through his body once more. “I can’t.”

“Why not?” The two words came out softly.

“Too much has happened. I couldn’t go back there, not after how I’ve been living. I couldn’t keep that from them.” Mike could almost see his parents’ faces, the shock, the… disgust. “And I’d have to tell them that I’m gay.”

Simon regarded him in silence for a moment. Then he gave Mike a gentle smile that made his heart ache. “They already know, Mike.”

What… wait… what?

Mike gripped the arm of the sofa. “How? How can they know that?”

Simon swallowed.
